Badges, Ready and Waiting

Feb 22 2024

Imagine preparing over 1000 badges for the 2024 AMEA Professional Development Conference only to face the force of Mother Nature. As the Registrar for AMEA, it is my job to make sure all attendees are registered, paid, and have the appropriate membership. We were through with the pre-registered, FAME, All-State Jazz Band members and Vendor’s badges by 4 pm. on Tuesday, January 16th. The snow and ice were not cooperative, but we were ready to head to Huntsville just in case. Even though it was disappointing to have to box the materials and store them away, I was proud of the decision the AMEA board made in consideration for the safety of our conference attendees and performers.  At this time, I have sent refunds to those schools that paid by check, and we are working to assure anyone who used PayPal will be issued a credit back to the card they used. I thank those who donated their fees and encourage those who can do so to consider donating to support the financial well-being of AMEA. I look forward to next year, and I hope that you do, too! PS

Registration for the January 18-20, 2024 AMEA conference in Huntsville will begin October 1st, 2023.  Please take a few minutes and pre-register online at the lower pre-registration price.  This will save you time and money going into the conference!  Being proactive is very important and your attention to getting registered for the conference is one of the ways you can speed up the process of getting your badges, etc.  I encourage you to remind your colleagues to get their registration completed as soon as possible.  Invite new music teachers and ask the inactive music teachers to join NAfME/AMEA and attend the conference.  Our young teachers need your encouragement so tell them how important the conference is to you and ask them to be present! Let’s achieve the goal of making the AMEA Professional Development Conference in Huntsville, the most highly attended AMEA Conference in our 78-year history!

Remember that a pre-requisite to registering for the conference is to join/renew NAfME at www.nafme.org.  Joining NAfME secures your membership in AMEA and your division.

You can pre-register now for the 2024 in-service conference at www.myamea.org.  Do it now and you will save time and money! Join me and your colleagues from all over the state in January at the Von Braun Conference Center in Huntsville for our wonderful Alabama Music Educators Association Conference!

Plan Ahead for the 2024 Conference

Aug 8 2023

It is not too early to start thinking about attending our AMEA Conference in January 2024. Just remember, you must join NAfME, and you should pre-register if possible.  A healthy organization is always concerned with growth and development, and the AMEA board is interested in growing our organization and getting all music teachers in Alabama involved in professional development through AMEA and NAfME.  You can help increase our membership by communicating the benefits of membership to our colleagues. When you are joining or renewing your membership, think of those music teachers in your area that may not be active members, and send them a message inviting them to join! You could send an email with their contact information to me at treasurer_registrar@myamea.org and I will invite them!

Remind your colleagues to join. Include the new music teachers (this year there are many new teachers out there), be involved as a mentor to the young music teachers, and invite the inactive music teachers that you know. If you just retired, keep coming to the conference (registration is free for you) and renew your NAfME membership at a reduced rate.

Renew your membership now at www.nafme.org.  Membership in NAfME is required for participation in state MEA-sponsored events like the AMEA Conference, the Elementary Division Fall Conference, and All-state and Musical Performance Assessments.  Joining NAfME secures your membership in AMEA and your division.

Registration will open soon for the 2024 AMEA conference in Huntsville, so be on the lookout for a link to the online registration at www.myamea.org. You will find it is easy and will save you time and money. Reunite with friends and colleagues from all over the state in January. Rejuvenate your energy, renew your enthusiasm, and join us as we gather in Huntsville.

Where is registration? This question was quite common on Thursday morning, but once our members found it, they discovered a very easy process! I would like to thank the membership for getting their NAfME dues paid before the conference. Because of your efforts, we have 1418 members! Attendance was up again this year with 1016 members checked in for the conference. I am sure there were a few members that missed the check-in process. Make sure you get your QR code scanned in the future, as soon as possible, because your PD is linked to it! If you did not check-in, you didn’t get the credit.

Thank you to Carl Hancock for his commitment to providing us with wonderful technology, and for his expertise in keeping it running smoothly. A special thanks to our Registration staff. We had many volunteers during the Thursday morning rush hour that helped us get the job done! Mary Ann, Carl, and Lauren were stellar as usual and the volunteer help from Heather Holmes and Greg Gumina was greatly appreciated! We found a great way to check in the members on the first morning. Thanks to our CNAfME members that stepped up and helped us for the first 3.5 hours! Having them during the rush was a great addition to the registration process. These CNAfME members gave up part of the conference to help: AJ Kell, Chris Wilson, Jenna Brown, JP Aufdemonte, John Niiler, Sam Sigal, Sarah Quinn Richey, Matthew Suit, Mariah Martin, Aleesa Parnell, and Mary Elizabeth Howze. We had 650 members checked in by lunchtime! A special thanks to Lauren Lingerfelt for being a registration assistant. She coordinated the students for the first part of the day and helped the rest of the time. At 4:00 pm on Thursday, we checked in our 900th attendee, Alyssa Watts. She was presented with our 75th Anniversary commemorative pin and a photo-op! We will be in a different location next year as we move to Huntsville, and you can be sure that we will make more changes to the process as we strive to make it better every year!

AMEA 75th Anniversary Celebration

President Raney asked that we create a committee to plan some in-person events for the celebration of AMEA’s 75th Anniversary. I would like to thank our committee members for their wisdom and input! The members are Pat Stegall-Chair, Michael Zelenak, Frank Buck, Ann Witt, Carl Hancock, Blair Calloway, and Sarah McLendon. We are planning several events for the conference including “Cocktails and Cakes” as part of the President’s reception. President Raney will cut the cake and we will have a toast in honor of 75 years as AMEA. Southern Performances is providing each division with a Flag/Banner for our opening ceremony procession and a group picture of the division members in attendance. We are planning displays for the AMEA Hall of Fame and Past Presidents, AMEA lapel pins, and an opportunity for retirees to meet with our FAME attendees to build relationships. We hope that you will participate in the Celebration of 75 years of AMEA!

Are you ready for some social interaction with real live people? I am, too! Although I have enjoyed the time at home, and video conference lessons and meetings, I am longing for some real, face to face interaction. Hopefully that will come soon. I know you are missing your students, friends, colleagues, and family. I just want to go to my favorite restaurant and have a great steak! In the meantime, we must all be thinking about how the future will be impacted by this crisis. Rest assured, the AMEA board is continuing the plans for the 2021 AMEA Professional Development Conference in Montgomery.

I hope you have noticed how much better the registration process has become. Thanks to the work of the AMEA Board, Media Specialist-Dr. Carl Hancock, Mary Ann Stegall and all the registration crew that have made this streamlined process so easy. If you must register on-site we have a process for that. Just remember to do what you can online, ahead of the conference. That would include having your membership current, registering at the kiosks provided at the registration area before coming to the main desk, and having your payment method ready. Checks are easy to process at the desk, but online credit card payments must be made at one of the kiosks.

Remember to renew your membership in June. Also, as soon as the conference registration becomes available, register online! I look forward to serving you again, but I really look forward to seeing you at the conference!

Stay safe, stay healthy!

Thanks to everyone for being prepared with your tickets for registration and check-in at the 2020 Alabama Music Educators Professional Development Conference! The process we are using now is very quick as long as you have pre-registered for the conference and joined/renewed your NAfME membership. Opening the check-in on Wednesday evening allowed us to get a head start. We checked in about 120 members that night which really helped. I encourage more members to take advantage of this if you arrive on Wednesday. We had 950 paid attendees for the conference. That is not a record, but that is a strong showing! Let’s increase next year’s attendance by inviting our members that did not attend this year. A special thank you to Dr. Carl Hancock for his help with the technology. This has really made a difference for our conference registration. Let me know of anything that you can think of that could help us make the process even better.
